Making Master Gardener Day at VSU and so much more happen

Before I ever met Andy people told me he a special person trying to make the information from extension available to everyone, especially people with limited resources. I thought that was black farmers and other limited resource farmers. Well, Andy did reach out strongly in those communities. I remember him having translation to Spanish at a conference. The first time I've seen that at a farming conference in Virginia. But the story that I wanted to share was of when I was on the education committee of the Virginia Master Gardeners Association and Andy was helping us to plan a new day long advanced education for Master Gardeners at VSU. In the planning meetings for that event is where I really got to see how Andy worked to make sure that event was accessible to all Master Gardeners. He helped us keep the price low, address physical accessibility issues an d make sure we included workshops about Master Gardener programs serving prisons and handicapped adults. He mentored our committee and introduced us to programs that broadened the reach of our event. Master Gardening is one of my volunteer activities but my work is with Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and increasing the availability of organic and open pollinated seed in the southeast. Andy constantly introduced me to farmers who might be interested in growing organic seed for us and really encouraged me to look at the numbers to help farmers see how seed growing can fit into their farm plan. Andy also encouraged us to make donations of seeds to all kinds local community and school gardens. Talking to him inspired us to expand our donation seed program and find creative ways to support gardening in areas with need. The thing is he never asked me to do any of these things he answered my questions. shared his experiences, introduced me to people and possibilities. Andy was one of the best friends of sustainable agriculture in working in extension. He was a teacher, a mentor and a role model for me.I will honor him by supporting the work that he started like the Virginia Biological Farming Conference and community gardens in Richmond.
