Andy Hankins, Revolutionary?

Created by jjpendergraph 11 years ago
When I think of Andy Hankins, the word revolutionary comes to mind. How, you may ask, can "revolutionary" describe this gentle, kind, caring person who evinced no anger or destructive tendencies at all in his demeanor or in his daily life, and who, in fact, worked for the state? Andy was the best kind of revolutionary. His was a vision of change: a change in the possibilities for the small farmers and Virginia agriculture, and while he did not advocate an overthrow of conventional agriculture, he planted a seed and nourished the dreams of hundreds of small farmers across the state and beyond. He worked from within the existing framework and helped bring about a groundswell of support and demand for local, fresh, organic, and diverse agricultural production. Rather than emphasizing differences in philosophy, he brought everyone to the table, and a bountiful table it is, today. Andy’s way was not that of Tienanmen Square, or the storming of the Bastille. His revolution is more akin to the revolution of the earth around the sun, the revolution that leads one season into the next, from glory to glory. Andy’s revolution brings us back around, to our senses and our roots, and forward in the dreams and work of his farmers, in a most literal and delicious way. Well done, sir.
